If you want to deal damage in bosses late game, Pirates deal much much much better damage than mages though Anyway welcome and have fun!

 

So Corsairs are top 3 in damage output during 4th job. They can also be #1 in damage output (their main competitor being Night Lords) but this depends on their mechanics- they have to learn to mount and dismount the battleship during boss attacks to prevent the battleship from breaking. It also depends on what party buffs they get- for example Speed Infusion makes them ridiculously strong.

The disadvantage of Corsairs is that they are stupidly difficult to train without leeching- it's kinda like Magikarp from Pokemon. Especially from level 30 onwards where many jobs either get strong single damage output or mobbing skills, Corsairs are stuck with neither until level 120. Also they don't offer any kind of party buff whatsoever.

On the other hand, Buccaneers are NOT noted for their damage output late game, although they still deal plenty more damage to bosses than Bishops and Archmages. They are still extremely highly desired due to their utility in parties- they have the buff I bolded above, Speed Infusion which is my favourite buff in the game; and Time Leap which resets cooldown of spells in a party (essential in late game bosses).

I should also say that Buccs are infinitely easier to grind than their gunner cousins, and overall are one of the easier classes to grind in general. Also you will feel very unique if you make it to 4th job and become an active bucc because this server severely lacks active high level buccs.

Both pirate jobs require you to be more active (none of that hold-down-one-button and attack playstyle like Night Lords and Heroes do)

But regardless, if your goal is to deal damage then pirates will be better choices than mages any day. Although not starting with a bishop to earn ez money means you always gonna be fighting for scraps

I'm a (i think) high level buccaneer, and i'll say you should only make a bucc if you find the class fun, since the path leading up to that point is a bit rough for some people.
It's doable for sure as your first char, but you'll have some problems but that's with most classes ¯\_ ツ _/¯
Though I can say that the class is alot of fun to play.

 

Buccs are awesome, you will struggle at the beginning with situations like these.
But as a higher level you can literally laugh at your party members if you meet them in the future
