Just in case anyone comes here wondering about this aswell. So after 30 attempts and an awesome piece of advice (thanks Deer!) you have better odds of getting the YWG the more INT you have. On attempt 31 I left my INT 5 points higher than my second-highest stat (STR) and got it first try! It probably works the same way with the other stat-gloves (LUK for purple, DEX for blue and STR for red, respectively), increasing their odds. Cheers!

Just to chip in on this with purely anecdotal numbers, out of my ~50 characters (of which like 25 mages) created in ML, I've landed ywg twice. One of which was on a mage-to-be and one of which was not on a mage-to-be (so lower int than other stats).

 

Now i can swim with the big fishes!
