Hi hi! I just started an ironman paladin (ironfaith) and while I'm having a lot of fun, I'm kind of worried about future scrolling efforts. I know if I have to grind out every single scroll I want to use or needing to get continuously lucky from gach I'll drive myself crazy and definitely burn out, it'd be too much and turn the fun challenge factor into just being miserable.

I was wondering if anyone else playing an ironman character has come up with any self-imposed rules / exceptions to allow yourself room to buy / "earn" scrolls through other means. When I say "earn" I guess I mean potentially buying the scroll on my main and putting it into storage for my ironman as opposed to buying it with the ironman's funds, so that it's "free" to the ironman as a reward to take.

I was thinking of things like maybe a quest requirement / # of total quests cleared, maybe something to do with monster cards and tier of ring, or even needing to get X amount of a scroll through drops before I'm allowed to freely purchase or "earn" them through fm, but I haven't landed on anything solid. I think questing is the most interesting to me right now as I've been doing a LOT of it on the account since my damage isn't great for grinding and earning potions/gears/scrolls is an added bonus, I just feel like I don't have enough knowledge or data about just how many quests there are in the game and what would be a fair amount to ask of myself as a challenge.

Any input would be super helpful!

the Ironman rule set is devised to make the game harder and in turn make your achievements grander. so any adjustment to the rules to make it easier would be frowned upon.

however we are forgetting an important detail. it is just a game. do whatever you want so long as you enjoy what you do. if you feel that cheating in some scrolls would make your experience more enjoyable then go for it. however if you do that i recommend writing down any item you use said scrolls on so that if you do end up regretting cheating, you can simply trash those gears and try again in the intended way.

    GL Friend.

Maybe you could work out a scroll exchange rate, X useless scrolls in exchange for 1 useful scroll from main.

Perhaps you could do a scroll insurance (X time farming a map for a scroll without getting anything gives you the right to buy 1 from main).

Like the poster above said, it's just a game so it's good you're exploring ways to keep it fun.

ty for the answer! I'm just replying to your sentiment in general of ironman rules, but I'm not doing it to be combative or anything and I know you aren't being combative either, I appreciate your comment!

To be truthful I don't give a fawk if it's "frowned upon," I'm just playing this character for fun and I decide what is and isn't fun for me which is why I know that grinding for a month straight for 7 scrolls for a helmet or something would definitely make me quit and that's not the point of the ironman. I'm playing alone (not in a group ironman guild, and I don't intend to join one) so while I'm calling it an ironman, it's ultimately a challenge character for me and me alone, so I get to devise my own rules to make it engaging.

I'll definitely keep track of what I use on what gear in case I decide to tighten my limitations in the future on the account.

This is a really interesting idea! I was thinking of kill count as a metric for when I can introduce my own "pity system" for a scroll, but since there's no real way to track that in game I wasn't sure how else to measure it. Time farming is a great solution, and so is an exchange method.

this is an interesting thread because i also have an ironman. to be honest i didn't even think about possibility of making scrolling more forgiving. some of my ideas are (some are similar to what you guys talked about already):

    1) make your own exchange quest! like collect 500 of a certain item, you can exchange it for a sword scroll of your choice!
    2) a pity system where 3 straight fails (or total fails) = 1 free scroll
    3) farm one, get one free
    4) you could even forget scrolling all-together and say, "every 5 levels my weapon gains one weapon attack" sort of thing
    5) treasure hunt like, every time you see a non-afk GM, get a free scroll
    6) exchange any 30% scroll with 30% one of your choice
    7) ???
    8) profit.

These are all such great ideas, thanks so much!! In the longterm I'll probably do a variety of "challenges" to reward myself in various ways, and this list will be a great resource to come back to.

Imma be that guy. This is like people who "nuzlocke" but have rules keeping pokemon alive. An Ironman is where you make a character and only use your own drops, no trading or help from other players. That's the definition. You can do whatever you want, it's a video game. But not adhering to the rules of Ironman would not make it an Ironman lol

You cared enough to make a whole thread asking people their opinions on the matter lol but okay

Here's a novel idea, if you think grinding for scrolls would be too hard and make you want to quit playing , maybe trade in game currency for the scrolls!

The topic is soliciting ideas for how to augment an Ironman ruleset to be more forgiving; I don't think they ever asked for opinions on whether it's an Ironman or whether it's worthwhile.

And I get where you're coming from, but someone wanting to alleviate some part of the challenge doesn't really make it appropriate to suggest throwing out 100% of the challenge. There's a middle ground somewhere. Why does it have to be extremes?

I mean the OP was already pretty brazen saying they "don't give a fawk" about the Ironman rules so why not just do whatever you want at that point? If you run 10 miles and call it a marathon congrats, but it's not lol

Sorry if I appear dickish but I just don't understand why people sign up for ultra hard challenges made because people want to move out of their comfort zone, then complain they're going to quit because it's too hard. It's literally self imposed

how dare you make arbitrary changes to arbitrary rules that you only arbitarily impose only on yourself!!! and how dare you make a post asking people ideas on how to commit this CRIME!!

lmao how is someone mad over this. yeah, as an ironman player, i don't care that other people make the rules more enjoyable for themselves.

actually now that i think about it, i have a new idea. How about allowing yourself to ONLY buy scrolls in FM? this way, you're still forced to farm items and weapons and mesos, but the overall scrolling experience will be easier. I actually like this simple idea the best among the ones i suggested.

If you want to change the rules that's fine, it's not an Ironman anymore then. Just call it something else.

I don't really disagree (could call it bronzeman, tinman, woodman, aluminiumman, whatever), but I also don't see why anyone should care. It's not like we have a leaderboard or anything. And besides, we play on a server with doubled EXP rates, "free" NX, and mountains of custom changes and content. Yet when we play MapleLegends, nobody will bat an eye if we say we're playing "MapleStory"

omg thank you MapleLegends user Nickolas I feel so much better knowing I have your approval and support on a challenge character that I alone make the rules for and decide how to best enjoy and spend my time playing!

not ironically, but if you play with a class that uses an unpopular weapon, you will be an ironman just by scrolling kekw
