Who is the new dawg in the Cash Shop?!?!


Meet: Bono Catfish, or his original Korean name: 개쉐뀌 (gaeshwekkwi) ~Son of a Bitch deliberately misspelled, hence his name being an anagram of said insult (credit to DrChuchu for that)

He is the first ever pet-like asset found in the game files of the early 2003 Korean Beta, somewhere after v1.23 and he is gone by v1.41.

He was likely never functional and you don’t find him in the place you would find pets in the game files these days. In v1.34 you find him in Data/Pet, instead of Data/Item/Pet, that directory didn’t exist at that point of the game.

What makes him extra unique is that he had a property only found in mobs: bodyAttack 1. It means that if pets used the same logic as mobs, he would deal touch damage. The plan was likely for pets to be able to fight alongside you, which would also have changed the quiz you need to do to revive your pet .

In the original files he was far from ready to be imported as a modern pet, as all he had was 4 animations:
Standing, Sitting, Jumping and Running.

No commands (and their respective sprites), text lines, inventory icon or Pet Equip.

It took some time, but after almost 23 years he is now fully functional as a pet and ready to roam around Legends

Yea he has both! There are other pets with Pee, like the Brown Puppy, but I’m not sure if any pets have both

TECH Win was a Japanese magazine popular from the 1990s to the early 2000s, featuring technology-related articles and usually including CDs with software discussed in each issue.



As you might have guessed and noticed by the small Thief artwork on the right side of the cover, our beloved Mushroom Game got a feature in March 2004!

MapleStory was actually one of the main subjects of the issue and one of the two CD's, containing MapleStory Japan v29 and other software, features an Orange Mushroom on the label side:


In the magazine you can find a multi page guide and introduction to the game and at the first page of this, we can already see our wig in question:


It reads something like:
"Everything included on the CD-ROM:
The client software and the manual!
In addition, exclusive items especially for TechWin readers!"

A couple pages later we get to learn how we can redeem this cool exclusive item:

Thanks to cooperation from Neckson Japan, the original developer, TechWin-exclusive items have been created. Take a look at the hat worn by the character in the lower left. Pretty cool, right?

These items are provided through the Neckson Mail service, which becomes available once you register a Neckson ID.

How to obtain the item

1. First, access the registration form from the CD-ROM.
   
   
2. Enter your Neckson ID and password.
   
   
3. A serial number will be sent to you via Neckson Mail.
   
   
4. Go to the Point Shop in-game and click the Coupon button at the bottom right.
   
   
5. Enter the serial number.
   

After entering it, the item will appear in the “Cash Item” column on the left side of the screen.

About the TechWin Hat

• The item is called the TechWin Straw Hat.
  
  
• Double-click it to move it to your Item Inventory.
  
  
• Once there, it can be equipped.

And thats it! The 'Techwin Wig' is originally a promo item exclusive to Japanese MapleStory as a gift to readers of the TECH Win magazine of March 2004!
Unfortunately the reason for why it looks so hideous is never explained...
