Over the past two days, I have noticed a few different players ask about potentially disabling or opting out of the PIN system, so I figured I'd ask to see how much interest there would be. I received a suggestion a couple days ago regarding potentially changing login so that the server does not ask players for their PIN if they meet certain requirements:

    1. If they are logging in from the same IP address that they last logged in from
    2. If they are logging in within 24 hours of their last login.

Essentially what this would do is speed up the login process slightly, at the risk of slightly less security. Just wanted to see how many would be interested to opting-in for a system like this and/or opting-out of it.

Personally I don't like PINs. The argument Kim has against making it optional is that everyone will disable it... which tells me that it should be disabled by default, not enabled.

I think #1 option should be enough.

They have to meet both requirements, right?

That is the plan yes. If you prefer it to be different, please do mention it.

I'd prefer to always enter my PIN, if that could be an option.

Number 2, before people start forgetting their pins.

Or maybe an option to choose between different settings, like always ask for PIN, or don't ask under some conditions.

The #1 part makes me comfortable so I like this idea.

This suggestion was bought up by one of our members and I was cool with the idea. However, like with any major change, we want to see the feedback of our users, which is why this topic has been created. I am still against totally disabling the PIN feature. However, I am very cool with an IP check so that if same IP logs in you don't have to insert it again.

By the way, would it also be checking the MAC adress?

Unfortunately, we don't have MAC information at the login screen. MAC is only recorded when you select your character.

Oh so that's why if you try to login on a different IP (but same MAC) when banned, you get d/ced when trying to select a character? Now I know why that happens. Cool

On topic, I'd be alright with this.

I'm fine with the above options, but, I mean, I just don't like the soft keyboard of PIN. If you could get around soft keyboard somehow, that'd make PINs bearable.

But not using soft keyboard defeats half the purpose of the pin :/

The reason Neckson did this is so Keyloggers can't snoop your PIN.

I'm fine with the pin system only takes an extra few seconds

I think that's a good idea, but I think there should be options about PINs. Like option one option would be to always ask for a PIN, another would be the idea you have, and then a third would be to completely disable it. Something along those lines, if that's possible. I honestly don't mind taking 5 extra seconds to punch in my PIN if it means extra account security.

I like the first option, it removes the hassle of entering your pin and provides some sort of security over your account.

Moving to accepted since the majority who voted seem to want the change. Changes will go into effect on next restart. By default, the game will always ask you your PIN, but upon logging in, you will be provided a new command (@togglepin), which will allow you to determine how long you'd like for your character to be offline before asking your PIN again.

If you want your PIN to always be asked, simply do not use the command and your PIN will be asked every time. By default, PIN will also always be asked if the IP Address from which your account is being logged in from changes. If your IP is the same and you do not wish to be asked your PIN so often, you can use @togglepin <hours> to set how many hours between logins you'd like for your PIN to be asked. We have set a maximum of 168 hours (1 week) for you to not be asked your PIN. You can pick any duration from 0-168.

    Examples:
@togglepin 168 -> asks PIN every time IP address changes or if account has not been logged in from in over 1 week
@togglepin 24 -> asks PIN every time IP address changes or if account has not been logged in from in over 1 day
    @togglepin 0 -> asks PIN every time
