I have to ask, why not just hire a pro who has time, if money is not an issue? I mean the costs of not getting donations because the server is down has to be significant?

Nah, some people got A/B because their attacks had to catch up with the lag. I believe the GMs unbanned though.

 

Oh geez, that's good they were at least unbanned!

 

Getting lag spikes and kicked out of the game is really frustrating, but that doesn't take away the appreciation I have for the mods combating these pesky DDosers! The wait for stability is worth it for this great server.

DDOS attacks don't have to cost a lot.

A DDOSer can send many small requests to servers and ask for a large response. The trick here is to spoof your ip-address, such that the large responses don't return to you, but to the victim of the attack:


The amplification factor is the response size divided by the request size. Using the CharGEN character generation command, amplification factors of over 300x can be reached. This option is disabled in windows by default, but DDOSers will use malware to turn it on. Virus scanners likely won't do anything about it, since it's a legitimate option in windows.



Now let's say the victim has a gigabit internet connection, and let's say the DDOSer has a 100 megabit connection.
The DDOSer sends 100 megabits worth of small packets to the amplifiers. With an amplification factor of (only) 50x, the victim will receive 5 gigabits of data per second. This is 5 times as much as the victim can handle. And it didn't cost the DDOSer anything.

That is true they can easily be amplified. I think in order to prevent DDoS attacks, it falls primarily on ISPs to help prevent packet spoofing as much as possible, as well as perhaps other server protocol in place to automatically not reply to such spammed requests. But either way, though it is something that concerns Legends, it's nothing any of us can do about it.

The thing is, if these attacks persist long enough, the source can actually be found and shutdown. Perhaps the perpetrators can even be discovered. So I think renting a botnet is safer, but they do cost money.
