Why HP washing sucks & suggestions

    I'm glad that you love the server but I do want to point out some things.

    Maplelegends is beyond the point of wanting it to succeed, it has already succeeded. The team have done this for 10 years, they know what they are doing and this topic have been discussed many many times, don't you think there is a reason why HPC has a cap and not just 30k everyone? You think your suggestions will make Maplelegends better, but have you ever thought about how it might actually work the opposite? Have you thought about how adding 30k hp progression for HPC will affect the entire game? Don't you think that if so many new players hated this as you suggest, this server wouldn't have lasted so long?

    FOMO is a real thing, and I understand how it can be a pain, I really do. I made too much stupid decisions due to fomo and as many have suggested, it will never end. After gaining 30k hp, your next fomo will be 10k mp. Then 15k, 20k and so on. But the one thing I always understand, is that this is entirely on me. I can't expect a whole system to change just to suit my needs.

    If you truly want Maplelegends to become better from your suggestions, then can I suggest that you take the time to actually go through the process, play and understand the game more. And when the time comes where you understood much more and you still feel like your current suggestions certainly fits Maplelegends, make another suggestion thread, this time with objective arguments instead of your anecdotal experiences.

    I've been here for 10 years and still agree that washing is a dogass mechanic and (the current implementation of) HPC is lackluster if anything.

    I'm another new player and I think washing is a shit system as well. I'm in the middle of washing 4 characters right now because it's optimal and it makes the most sense to me to build my characters "right" the first time. Counting rocks, pairing cacti, and aligning objects to solar orbits 5+ times a day is an absolutely absurd form of progression though and I'm amazed how adamantly people defend it as what should be the be-all and end-all of endgame progression (in regard to HP). I think the fact that the same topic pops up so often is proof of peoples' dissatisfaction with it. Maplelegends is successful, sure, but I don't think this was the reason for it. I also think "30k everyone" is a vast overstatement. Post-HPC progression doesn't mean instant gratification 30k handouts to everyone. Reaching 180+ is already for a small minority of players. Grinding for years on in-game tasks (eg. through repeatable quests or other means) beyond that to reach 30k after is something only the most dedicated players would do. The majority wouldn't even have access to it, and the majority of those who do would likely never reach 30k (outside warriors and buccs), but would still be able to slowly progress and find their own stopping point that they are happy with to feel comfortable in content (eg. maybe Player X just wants 17k HP on their ranged class).

    I'm not against the existence of HP washing, but I do think that refusing to even consider other options is not beneficial to the game. The server is successful thanks to its staff who put lots of work into both QoL and balance to make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone, and the community who offers their thoughts and input on how to make the game better. Not every idea is worth adding, but I think most have a potential to be built upon and BECOME something worth adding. I've mentioned in an earlier post, but I think the issue here is not whether additional HP should be obtainable, but how it's implemented. Is it balanced? Engaging? Does it bring together the community? There's a limitless number of ways to implement something like this, and if done well, it would absolutely be a benefit. I don't expect it anytime soon of course - there's still several higher priority things, like the remaining HP challenge quests to still be implemented, which I'm sure takes a ton of time to design and add to the game, as well as other priorities like seasonal events and other simpler and/or more immediately impactful suggestions. Still, I think these HP ideas and suggestions are important too. Sure, the server doesn't need it to succeed, but if it's something that can make it even better, then I think it's worth consideration.

    I didn't mean to imply it hasn't already succeeded, I want to see its continued success and growth. All successful MMOs understand that they need to update to keep the community thriving, including Maplelegends. I think the staff recognise there is always room for improvement which is why they continue to make updates, which is part of the reason I love this server.

    I have given that some thought, which is why I tried to design a solution that maintained things like the value of INT equips and NX requirements to maintain voting numbers.
    After all, I'm not staff, I'm not forcing these changes onto the game. I'm just sharing my ideas and expereinces, it doesn't hurt anyone. Surely that is part of the purpose of the forums? You are free to ignore my ideas if you think they are bad.
    Part of the reason I made this thread is because I'm interested in what seasoned players think the main drawbacks would be to a system like this, what are your thoughts on this topic?

    I think there can be value in sharing my anecdotal experience as a new player, sometimes it can be beneficial to see how things are perceived by new players. All MMOs health to some degree depends on the stream of new players entering to replace attrition rate. Of course, the opinions of new players should be taken with a grain of salt, which is why I made it clear that I am writing this thread from the perspective of a new player.

    This is, amusingly, arguably the biggest contributor to the server’s continued success. The majority of new players come from GTOP which is why ML continues to make such an effort to encourage players to continue voting. There is no world in which this isn’t part of the game, because as soon as that happens, the server dies.

    Agreed, that is why I asked if he understood the impact it will have on the entire game when implementing such systems. Many other things will be affected, like voting.

    As I’ve said in OP and comments that I think the solution should require at least as much if not more NX than the current system in order to maintain voting.

    Ideally read OP before commenting to keep the thread productive SlimePolice a lot of comments have been addressed already in OP.
    Not just specific to you Pumpkin but other people’s comments as well.

    Let's make this clear, so you disagree with repeatable challenge from 180 HPC as it does not involve any voting?

    Honestly, whatever is in your OP has already been addressed. You haven't brought up any new points at all. Some people have also pointed it out already that you are not reading their comments at all. So maybe you should apply this to yourself first?

    While this is much more friendly, it completely destroyed the economy of books in OG.
    Though at that point, everybody was able to Solo PB in like 1-3 minutes. (Heck you can get to lvl 200 within a day with Hyper Burning).
    So the mastery books were more tedious than anything else.

    In ML where the books actually hold value this would completely destroy their position in the market, which does have an impact on the health of the server.
    Though it would be nice to introduce new sources of MW20/30 (Chaos Zak?).

    There's got to be a balance between "user friendly" and "destroying EV's".

    As a player, I wouldn't be unhappy with a solution like that. However I think it would make sense for it to also cost NX for two reasons; 1. to maintain voting and 2. To make it fair to existing players. That's why I included the NX cost in the system as explained in OP. (I guess you didn't read it) SlimeSad

    I think any fair reading of this thread will show I'm making a good faith attempt to read the comments and reply to them. If there's something that I missed that you want me to reply to, please feel free to point me back to it.

    Fair point, and one I overlooked. Though, like I mentioned, I think proper implementation is the real issue. Using the repeatable quest idea and taking my idea for what a quest like that might look like, what if we were to add in an NX item that's required for turning in the quest? Similar to the golden bell from Nero's necklace but costing NX instead of 1 meso (let's say 400:1 NX:HP to match cost to 7m for 30k). We could maybe have something like this:

    -Weekly quest level 180 or higher
    -Pre-requirements: Level 180 HP challenge complete
    -Talk to Rosa to accept quest
    -Kill 3 Zakum
    -Kill 3 Horntail
    -Kill 1 Pink Bean
    -1 x <40k NX Item>
    -10,000,000 x Meso
    Reward: +100HP to Rosa Charm

    Here we get a form of progression through something that requires both effort and community engagement (bossing regularly), voting (NX cost), and also adds a meso sink. It also offers a reason why some may not want to go all the way to 30k and instead find their own stopping point they're happy with (tired of Zakum? Mesos better spent elsewhere?). The 40k NX cost also aligns with roughly 1 week of voting for the weekly repeatable quest, and introduces continual voting for those who may not have much other reason to (HPC aren't otherwise washing, and you only need so many owls and TP rocks).

    I've seen a lot of points reiterated on both sides and I... kind of agree with both sides on various points lol.

    I'll say that while I understand HPC can feel underwhelming for new players compared to the 30k washing mechanic, for your own sake it's really just not something to compare yourself to in the first place. As cliche and bummer as this sounds, unfortunately you need to get over that hump if you want to not be haunted eternally over all the hypothetical gains you did not get on your first characters, gains that are ultimately not required to join most content. It's not something anyone should expect, especially when the initial goal is probably not optimization, or even endgame content - it's nostalgia and enjoyment of the game. You can still do everything with HPC if your playstyle shifts from nostalgia to srs mode, you just might have to be more skilled and savvy and not rely on your big cushion of HP to make up for lack of skill. That's really not too bad, is it? I wouldn't complain if HPC gave some more HP, but it sounds like anything sub-30k is going to be considered as insufficient here, which might be a fundamental issue of perspective. If the only thing preventing you from satisfaction with your characters is FOMO, I would gently suggest that's what needs to be addressed first and foremost for the sake of not constantly inflicting psychic damage on yourself.

    We can probably all agree that washing including unpleasant core mechanics such as your character being utterly unplayable until higher levels and having to leech and spend probably a billion mesos to get to playability... sucks, just on a basic level. This is a common perspective, it's nothing new, the only difference is how happy people are that they got through the slog and reaped their rewards. Some people who enjoy the math and calculations and optimization do enjoy it, but most people do not. I agree it's bad game design, if that was intentionally designed. But it wasn't. It's an exploit, one that provides comfort.

    But, what some people are assuming of you - that you want it handed to you on a silver platter - is not what you seem to be asking, right? The issue I'm hearing here is more about wanting the opportunity to optimize beyond what HPC provides as the minimum threshold, and you're willing to put in the work to achieve it, however long it takes, however challenging it is, so long as it's possible.

    I'm on board with that. Why not? It's the same concept as staying on the server for a long time to accumulate NX, except this is more an accumulation of grinding and working hard. Gate it behind Rosa's final HPC tier, make it dependent on running difficult content, whatever - it doesn't need to be easy, just achievable. I'm positive that some will see the time gate of 180+ and wrinkle their nose at it, and just opt for the standard washing to get to their 30k goals sooner. That's totally fine, because they're willing to pay the price to achieve that goal with NX and money. It's a different kind of grind, and it becomes route-preferential. Maybe even some folks who quit their first characters would come back at the prospect of their dashed hopes being revived and it would make for a more active community. Sounds good to me. :V

    This is a really important point for those who are worried about gatekeeping in higher level content. I would argue people who do gatekeep over these kinds of details are not people you would want to be running with in the first place, and they're the ones shooting themselves in the foot tbh - you can have 30k HP highly geared folks who have the personalities of moldy wet noodles, and folks who will need HB but absolutely kick ass and are personable and lovely to interact with, and I think you're more likely to see the latter be the one people want to invite. Higher level bossing involves social graces and I think if you can prove your competence in content and generally positive disposition, you'll be in a pretty good position!

    sorry to go off-topic but this thread taught me that i should enjoy the game. and is impossible to survive to fight high level mobs if you don't know what you doing. even tho i wish i can go everywhere to enjoy the word of MapleLegends so i need to be ready with heal items and good equipment.

    Challenge system should be an opt-in where you reduce your HP in exchange for stronger buffs.
