It does sound like a MAC address block, as you have mentionned.

 

I can confirm this exact same issue is still not fixed in 2025. I can play the game on my desktop but my wife finally agreed to try the game and wanted to join me from her laptop (that laptop was never used for this game before so there's no chance a previous account was banned on it) and she was getting this error. When I tried to log in with my account on her laptop, I also couldn't log in.

In a few months it will be the 10 years anniversary of this bug, I went through forums and it seems like it has been veeery common over the past decade and the mods kept on trying to blame the players for it one way or another, really strange phenomena...

 

As a dev, I really think that it's still a bug that a random computer that was never used for this gets it's MAC address banned with no reason. You don't see this issue on any other platform or game, the fact that a manual workaround exists doesn't make it a non-issue.

It's ok though, I saw somewhere that a ban appeal would take 3+ days so we just went on MapleRoyals instead. I'll open the ban appeal just in case for her (from this account, it doesn't matter what account opens the ban appeal since the ban is on the machine itself. Both our accounts work on my personal machine)

 

Oh I see. It does make sense, if hackers are able to spoof other people's addresses and they get banned, a brand new computer from it's box might get that address. Makes you question whether computer MAC address ban is even relevant if those addresses are just throwaways from the PoV of the hacker, but yeah that's another story.

That's still better than if you'd used a kernel-level anticheat, that would get rid of hackers but would also get rid of all the innocent Linux users including me.

Yet another way hackers can ruin the experience for everyone else lol. I bet over 99% of people who download this game wouldn't even make a ban appeal or look it up, they'd just move on to another game due to this, that's unfortunate.
