Cru and Captain racist caricatures

How is that blackface opposed to just being darker toned skin?

 

If its that simple modify the mobs yourself, also make a mod for your own game that removes the problem, hell if it works well upload it here for other people who share your view.

Im not really that bothered by it myself its just mushroomgame.

Id say there are peoples characters with names/outfits that are significantly more offensive than this non issue. Unless this is just a really bad troll

Thank you for bringing this up. I completely agree that this is a racist caricature of black people (dark skin, thick lips, villain). I would also like to see this change.

 

I wouldn't take some of the responses seriously. Unless its a staff member accepting your suggestion/design change, you shouldn't trust random people posting something like

 

I see this as an attempt of white-washing/virtue signaling. Things that are racial are not inherently racist.
Is the character design of balrog also racist because it has a darker skin tone? Do we remove Dances with Balrog because of its caricature of indigenous cultures? Is all of CBD/Ulu/Malaysia considered racist because you have dark anthropomorphic characters?

I'd be more inclined to argue about themes of racism in a cartoon/fantasy game if there was any inclination of discrimination in the game, but designing a black villain does not necessarily make it racist, just like it isn't racist to make a White or Asian or Alien villain.

 

Sprites are dark characters, Kru & Captain are racist caricatures. There's a difference

Going to preface this by saying these are my own views on the matter and don't necessarily represent the views of ML staff.

Kru and Captains, to me, do look like racial caricatures and looking at them through a modern lens makes me a little uncomfortable. However, the purpose of this server is to give an authentic nostalgic experience, which to me means not sugar coating the game's rough edges. It's similar to how people watch Friends in a modern time and find the off-hand homophobic, transphobic and otherwise xenophobic jokes to be uncomfortable. Does this mean you can't enjoy it? Well, that's very much up to you, but if you're watching out of nostalgia, you probably don't want someone to edit those jokes out (I know I wouldn't).

 

Oh sorry, y'all are correct. Just to drive the point home, we should instead add a monster of a yellow bowl full of rice with slanted-eyes and a yellow belt and have the theme be, 'the bowl of rice doesn't speak the right language and needs to learn kung fu to fend for itself'!

Based on a race? Yes. Racist caricature? Obviously not!

If this Kung Fu Rice Bowl character was in a fantasy story amongst a cast of other fighting food items, then it would be intentional character design and fit perfectly in place. If they had expanded the story beyond to show inhumane, mistreatment, humiliation of this character because of these character features (as is in line with the offensive history of blackface and black caricature), then absolutely, that would be racist and lend argument to the possibility of racist design. Do you see that with Kru/Captain? I really don't.

 

I agree, I also believe they should change the color of black wyverns because they obviously represents a certain group and how they kill much like wyverns kill mages.
