Adding or removing currency sinks is a dynamic balancing act that is nearly impossible to get perfect yet still necessary even if only an approximation. Even with currency sinks inflation will exist. Usually economies mitigate hyper-inflation by introducing a maximum value to certain commodities so a commodity can always be purchased for a maximum price (from the government (NPC)) and the currency is then either destroyed or redistributed in some way. This can cause fluctuation in the value of said commodities but no more than the maximum set value.

This is basically what was explained to me when I asked my colleague on how do economies usually mitigate hyper-inflation.

Whilst debate goes on about how to restabilize the economy, I'd like to point out one thing; Inflation in Maple Legends is, essentially the loss of value of meso. Something i've noticed about increasing or decreasing prices that may or may not correlate to inflation, is the supply of certain items.

I'm not sure what scroll and service prices were like when the server was in its early growth stages, but you would most certainly have to compare the price of these items back then with prices in this moment of time. There are few variables to be considered when declaring the server is in a state of mass inflation and potential breakage of the economy in the near future.
    • Price of scrolls, items and services compared to the early growth stage of Legends.
    • Concurrent players in the earlier years of legends compared to concurrent players now.
    • Supply and demand of scrolls, items and services, which is relational to the price and concurrent player count.
The main variable that you need to consider here is the ratio of concurrent players back then, and now, and with this given ratio you would compare the ratios of scroll, item and service prices then, with now. There is no nail in the coffin evidence provided that the prices of these items have increased as a result of too much meso generation, only anecdotal evidence that a some or many feel the same way about with regards to certain item prices. It's baseless to claim inflation is happening at a quick pace or that the 'economy will crash' if you cannot provide evidence that past prices were much less than prices now. A factor that plays a major role in the increase/decrease of scroll, item and service prices is essentially the supply and demand of these commodities. Yes, from given points in this thread, we can see that the price of services, particularly helmet services, have decreased due to a large increase in supplies (the aging of the server and players.) This is an example of an increase in price that has taken place not due to the effects of inflation. Another example that holds less credibility to reason, is the increase in Claw for Attack 30% prices. These prices spiked massively not because of inflation, but because of one person who stockpiled the scroll, massively decreasing the supply to this scroll. At the same time, this could be an outlier in the case of inflation, which is why it holds less credibility in the argument. However, if you're able to apply this to any relatively similar situation (multiple people buying out a certain scroll or item) to other scrolls, you would see that the cause is not solely due to inflation, but also due to heavily lowered supply, and greater demand.

A veteran player of the server using anecdotal examples of the state of the server previously compared to now, is not enough information itself to prove that the economy of the server itself is indeed going into depression. At the same time, statistics of scrolls, item and service prices then compared to now is nearly impossible to show or prove unless people have been watching and recording since the start of the server.

My point is not looking at our current situation at the moment, but looking at what's going to happen, because this is a problem in every mmo that uses similiar currency system, you're not wrong that at the moment we can rarely see or not at all any indicator of inflation, but as meso keeps being generated much more than destroyed the inflation is inevitable (not saying its coming fast, but its coming.)

We can help prevent hyper-inflation and the use of elite items from becoming the real currency by fixing their value to each other, by introducing White Scrolls and Chaos Scrolls to NPC shops. It could be slightly over the price of what they're traditionally traded at, like 85mil for Chaos Scrolls and 100mil for White Scrolls. It also has the added benefit of creating a very large meso sink for every elite player to take part in, at least if they choose the direct shopping method rather than buying it from another player for less.

Magic Throwing Knives are also good for that. Massive money sink, but really it would only affect around a score of players.

you might find resistance to that idea since it encourages a meta shift into meso farming> scrolling perfect items (gobies anyone?) but a meso sink of some sort would be good

Instead of the continuous nerf on goby, have there been talks of better ways to fix the influx of mesos?

ok enough goby talk. has anyone actually measured the current mesos/hr -- post server update? Let's start with that and then see what it do.

Introduce FM Owls for mesos and some other NX goodies for mesos. We just need more things to spend our mesos on.

If you mean post-nerf goby mesos/hr I got 9.4m/hr(only had time for one test but another person got 9.3m/hr)

I have HB/MU/SI, the spawn rate was gutted so that goby is only a little profitable over leech if you have an SI mule .
Selling 1hit leech in certain areas is better than gobies profit-wise.

Same as Taida, I got 9.3mil/hr (6.3mil/hr solely on mesos) and have HB/MU/SI as well.
    gobye copy.jpg

The nerf on goby made it less profitable over leech because with the current market you make 9-10mil/hr split leech at most places. Now that's just making profit on the buyers. If you factor in the mesos you make while selling and the items you npc, you can make over 2mil/hr solely on that... which means you make around 11-12mil/hr. In the end making goby inefficient with time and mesos.

Thank you for those real numbers, TaidaTaida and mightyboymightyboy ; With that I can draw up the following comparison:

According to Forum user Number32Number32 in Feb of last year, the net profit from gobies yielded 12.5m/hr using a Meso-Up mule.

The difference between pre & post nerf is a reduction of over 3 million mesos per hour. Was this your intended design, KimberlyKimberly ? Can we at least make it around 10.1m ~ 10.3m mesos gain per hour as an alternative to selling leech?

This is potentially the worst farming map in comparison to other known farming locations that have potential for leech. The numbers from the user Cozy states a net profit of "8~9m/hr" was gained from solo-grinding with no merchandising at Skeles.

It appears the adjustment was a bit extreme on the DSG (Deep Sea Gorge) map. Would you consider taking another look at DSG 2 and perhaps weigh the possibility of adding ONE MAYBE TWO more goby houses and we can retest?

12,572,986 in 1 hour of Gobi.
Thoose numbers was before the first goby nerf. After the first nerf you avged around 10m/h. Now after second nerf its like 8-9m with si/mu.

Gobys will not be re-buffed. A lot seem to compare pure mesos with leeching. With leeching there's no new mesos made (besides the person attacking of course), while farming is pure new mesos made into the server. I know all of you love to farm, but things get balanced here for the health of the server. A lot of servers (as someone shown a video before too) is that more and more mesos get into the game, which eventually make things more and more expensive, which makes it harder and harder for new people to get started (or WS/Chaos becoming currency items).

The other thing is that Gobys really wasn't a good farming spot in GMS. The reason why Gobys is so infamous in Private Servers is because the spawn rates are not GMS-like, nor is the aggro. This unfortunately also applies for MapleLegends.

    Some random old videos:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIpgrsXRVJk

    Note 1:29 in ^s'video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahjRRY4d1wI

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lJz7n6rhSM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QStEIlIQgr0

For informative purposes the way spawns worked in GMS is that when you are alone in the map the spawns would be minimum. However, the more people there are in the map the better the spawns get, as well as respawn rate (the speed mobs respawn). In MapleLegends (and a lot of other servers) the spawns are immediately maxed when 1 person is in the map. This is why maps such as GS2 and Gobys are much better than if you compare it with videos on youtube. GS2 is another map that had much less spawns in authentic GMS over many Private Servers.

So in short, we balance Gobys based on how they were in GMS. This is done to slightly slow the pure mesos entering the server, but its also done for balancing and authentic reasons. Furthermore, mules were not easily supposed to be at Gobys, as demonstrated in video #1.
    --------
Now to give a short reply to all the 'bring x meso sink'. The issue with introducing a lot of sinks is that the server becomes non-authentic and less user friendly. These things were not in GMS, so introducing custom this and custom that, which most likely needs a custom NPC brings a lot of 'Private Server' into the game, which confuse people that get started.

If sinks happen, its probably an idea to make them temp sales, maybe. That way it doesn't feel permanent out of place and more a nice sale for people to grab. Furthermore, adding items for meso for sinking purposes need a lot of thought and balancing into it. This counts especially for things like AP resets.

    No.

EekoEeko suggested adding meso-purchasable owls as a sink. I would like to chip in some support for that (even if it is a temporary sale, as you mention). In a sense, it's a double sink for mesos:
    • First, it's a sink because the mesos are used to actually purchase the owl.
    • Second, taxes are taken from the purchases which were made using the owl's information. The owl itself encourages meso-spending in two ways:
    1. It helps people find a deal good enough for them to spend mesos in the first place (where they might not spend otherwise if they couldn't find a deal)
    2. It helps them to find the item they wanted to purchase (where they might not make any purchase at all because they don't want to spend the time walking through all the FM rooms trying to find the one thing they're looking for).
As to other items that can be purchased with mesos, I don't know about those right now. However, owls seem like a very good item to at least test the waters on this concept.

Also while selling certain 1hit leech is more profitable than gobies, gobies still allows you to farm it whenever you want, without being limited/forced to by a timer.
It's still decently profitable, and a good option for those who don't have much time to bother finding a buyer and map.

But seriously can we fix the <1 page search results for so many needed scrolls too lmfao, can't act like that isn't an issue that is also making things more expensive
