is there any way to really play in a worthwhile way without paying for leech?

im just trying to experience some nostalgia and go about the game from where i left off as a kid.

since getting above 60 all ive seen in any area thats worth trying to grind is someone afk and some cleric just spamming aoe. i mean sure you can find empty areas, if you want to triple your play time for a level for no real gain for time spent, but who wants to be doing that.

its not like im even following guides to find farming spots, im just seeing what enemies exist and going to check them out to see the maps i never got to.

does it just get worse as it goes on? if i choose to have a worse time to get past this negative, am i just going to run into some holy spam every time i find what seems to be a ok area?

i feel like people have missed my point a bit. its more that if you want to progress it feels like you are competing for limited maps against ppl using it to boost, like i very rarely see a map been used that isnt some priest aoe leaching, maybe 1/20 is current level. if it only gets worse as the game goes on and less maps become efficient, especially for shorter play time and wanting to advance at a ok pace, then it would be good to know before committing more time.

It all depends a bit on your job and level, what class & level are you now?
Eventually there's a point you reach where progression towards level 120 gets kind of tedious and slow but usually after hitting 4th job and getting some levels in this progression picks up a lot again in both grinding but also slowly into bossing options.

playing I/L out of pure nostalgia as a kid seeing these mad men running about summoning thunder everywhere. throwing in a few hours a week to something relaxing and memorable was the goal

65 atm, its not exactly slow lvling at all considering what i got to as a kid, but its more that when i log on, it seems to be a choice between lvl 1/2-1/3 the speed with twice the effort of any decent maps because of leachers boosting on anything good ive stumbled across, or dont play since the idea of putting 3x my free time into something for the same output willingly is legit insanity.

it just appeared amazingly suddenly, i knew ppl payed for boosts, but until the last few levels it wasnt really seen

I would highly recommend Ghost Ship 2 map to grind on at your levels.
You're at a point where Leech is quicker for some time but grinding isn't too bad for IL here
Once you get to 70 I would suggest to find a cheap elemental wand 4 and put some points in Booster and element amplification right away, you can then start moving to Vikerola who are also weak to lightning and it should get you very solid Exp at the cost of some extra potions.

After a while you will have enough points in those skills and will be maxing out Ice Strike at which point you can move to Gallopera and grind there until 120. It does get a bit slow eventually so I could recommend just biting the bullet and buying a couple levels of leech from around 115 to 120 or so!

i actually found this map out on my wonders randomly hitting things to see what happened after i chatted to the plane lass on day, was maybe a lvl an hour. im not really following a plan, it would sort of kill the adventure feel i want to finish off, getting lost and wondering how tf i get back from somewhere after a week away is part of the fun.

like i get what your saying, but even if i was going to track what you said and follow the best route, it would be the issue of maps been dominated by ppl spamming the holy aoe for leach. paying for leach when i dont have time to sit for a few hours seems like the only real way to get around logging on for the hour or so you have free and thinking "oh every channel is full of leachers again" then waiting a days to flip the coin again to see if you get to play.

if its just leach all the way down, id prefer to stop playing before investing too much and losing what was fun memories

I guess that entirely depends on how much you would let yourself be affected by what others do, there's definitely people that leech all the way even when grinding can be quicker at various level ranges. But it's definitely not something you need to do in other to progress the game and I wouldn't let my own fun be affected by how other people play the game.

i think we might have talked by each other a bit. im not too arsed if ppl want to leach and not play the game, its more that if am i going to be seeing it more and more as i try to get the most out of the few hours i have a week to really sit and relax with the game

investing more hours now just to find the good spots are taken by leach the most of the time would just feel like a waste, id prefer to stop where i had fun rather than become bitter i cant play a game i invested more into

Just like Nightz said, it depends on your class, I leveled from 1-200 without ever leeching

I agree with what others have said in that: don't let your own experience be affected by others who may seem to be flying through levels by leech. There is no rush, enjoy the ride!
Also, a noteworthy advantage of grinding over leeching is you will get mesos. Mostly in the form of gachapon tickets (and getting lucky at some point or another, which, given you accumulate enough gachapon tickets, eventually you will end up getting something good.
65-70 is a bit of a dry patch. I decided to do some quests! Look for example at https://forum.maplelegends.com/index.php?threads/good-quests.2947/ guide! Even though I had already completed all of the quests in it, I also looked at another guide on a forum from a competing server (not sure if I can link it, google "Maplestory quests worth doing 2.0". After I completed all of those, I did some additional random quests. Although this was probably sub-optimal, I made mesos from gachapon pulls and had lots of fun traveling to different areas!

    Good luck!

Nearly all of us grinded our first char, eventually if you stay long enough everything comes down to an hourly game. If I can do something worth 20m/hour and buy 12m/hr leech, then I net 8m/hr by not grinding, etc.

Most of us are just chasing the most efficient gameplay

It's nearly impossible for a new player to buy leech for meaningful amounts of levels unless they completely lucked into a CS/WS
The vast majority of people will grind to a high level on their first character so you're not "missing out" so to say

You can definitely play how you want. I started at the end of April and hit 120 on my Dark Knight in under a month strictly grinding (roaring at CD's was a bit cheese but whatever). There's some great grinding maps in this version and the experience even for new players is not bad at all.

Just because leech is faster doesn't mean it's a better experience. I've made some good friends grinding away (especially Gallos) and its for those interactions that I've come to a classic server.

So far, I completely agree with OP here. I have a bishop, and all I do when I play is self-leech. I'm not sure if this is something that can be solved without a wipe, or some kind of official New-leaf thing that's officially supported by staff?

i think what OP is complaining about is not the existence of leeching but that there is 1)only a few meta maps 2)all meta map channels are taken up by leechers. Just trying to clear things up. Though are leeching maps other than Ulu2, petri, skele, ghost ship, full as well?

perhaps an unpopular opinion: I don't see leech as the bad thing that people see, it's even important for the economy, I know a lot of people who like it and sell it to make money, including new players doing low lv to provide initial funding, leech is only OP if you level more than one character, for solo there are very few lv ranges that give you more exp than solo (considering that it is not a char full of int), there are there are "n" other ways to grind, to make money, to make more exp than leech, but it a mmorpg, need to explore

I've been playing IL since 2017 and never once paid for leech. IL doesn't "need" leech the way some attacker classes do.

I've played with 4 IRL friends and we've grinded the entire way to 4th job. You *Can* self leech yourself until the end of time, but no one is forcing you to do so. If you're not a fan of leeching simply don't do it. You're missing out on the entire classic experience by leeching every class.
